Advice

How do I get advice?

You can contact us by phone, email or visit one of our offices. We also offer outreach services in your community. You may be able to get the help you need immediately, if not we will arrange an appointment. Contact us to discuss your issues.

If I see you do I need to bring any paperwork?

If you have any documents relating to the issue you want help with then it is often very helpful to see these to get the full picture of your circumstances but don’t let that stand in the way of contacting us for help.

Is the advice really free?

Yes, completely. We don’t charge for any of our advice services, regardless of your income or the complexity of your problem.

Is there anything you cannot help with?

There are some issues where we might need to put you in touch with other trusted organisations, perhaps for example because we are not authorised to give advice on that topic – eg – if you want advice on how to invest your money & savings. We would always explain why and help you to find the best and most affordable way to get the help you need.

What documents should I bring with me?

Depending on why you are coming to see us, the following is a general guide of information that would be useful to our advisers:

  • Debt: Income details, bank statements, and details/agreements of money you owe.
  • Housing: Your tenancy agreement, landlord notices, or mortgage details.
  • Employment: Your contract, recent letters from your employer, and any disciplinary or dismissal documents.
  • Benefits/General: Relevant bills, benefit award letters, or Home Office documents.

Can you give me emergency money or pay my bills? No, Citizens Advice cannot directly give you charitable support, cash, or pay off your debt. They can, however, help you negotiate with lenders, check your benefits, and refer you to local.

What topics do you cover?

We advise on benefits, debt, housing, employment, welfare support, family matters and much more. If you’re not sure whether we can help, just ask – we’ll point you in the right direction.

Will you keep my information safe?

Yes. Your privacy is important to us. We follow strict data protection rules and keep everything confidential.

Get involved

Can I volunteer with you?

We’re always looking for volunteers. Whether you have professional experience or just want to help your community, there’s a role for you. Check our current vacancies page for opportunities.

Do I need prior experience or qualifications?

No. Specific qualifications are not required. Full training is provided for all roles

How much time do I need to give?

Commitments vary depending on the role but most volunteers give 1 day per week. We can be flexible with this and the requirement for roles such as Trustee’s require less time commitment, so if you are interested in volunteering with us please do get in touch and we can always try to find a role that suits your schedule.

What is the hiring process like?

The recruitment process typically involves an application form, shortlisting and an interview that may require a presentation but this will be made clear in the job application pack and is role dependent. We are proud to be a disability confident employer and are happy to make any adjustments required to ensure our recruitment process is as inclusive as possible. We are much more interested in who you are and what skills you have rather than your academic qualifications.

Will volunteering affect my state benefits?

Generally, no, but it depends on your specific benefits. You can check the Citizens Advice Volunteering and Benefits guidance to confirm before applying.
